A “quartz” watch is one that is powered by a quartz movement, complete with an electronic circuit board, synthetic quartz crystal, and battery, as opposed to mechanical moving gears, wheels, and other parts. Most quartz movements, whose second hands move in individual “ticks,” beat at a frequency of 32,768 oscillations per second, although today there is also very high precision (VHP) calibers on the market that vibrate at even faster oscillations per minute. Its made of Sapphires one of the hardest minerals in the world that why its scratch-resistance.

How a Quartz Movement Works:

A quartz movement utilizes a battery as its primary power source and is typically the type of movement that you will find in your standard, no-frills watch. To create power in quartz watch movements, a battery sends an electrical current through a small quartz crystal, electrifying the crystal to create vibrations. These vibrations keep the movement oscillating and drive the motor to move the watch's hands. Quartz movements in fine Swiss watch brands, such as Patek Philippe, are designed to comply with their strict quality standards.

This tradition of excellence at Baume & Mercier is based on the design and development of its products at Maison's headquarters in Geneva, and on the "établissage" process carried out at its workshops in the Swiss Jura, in Les Brenets. This means that watch production is centralized in Switzerland. Baume & Mercier attracts the best talents to ensure it achieves the ultimate quality and respect for tradition; this has been Maison’s strength since it was founded.

Each of our watches is a result of the passion of our master watchmakers and a desire to innovate, which is reflected in thousands of sketches, hundreds of hours of modeling, and years of development. The skill of our design studio lies in finding the balance between artistic creativity and technical possibilities, which is the responsibility of our development engineers.

Care Instruction:

  • Avoid exposing your watch to extreme heat or sudden changes in temperature or humidity (sauna, Jacuzzi, hot springs, etc.).
  • Protect your mechanical watch from magnetism by keeping it away from strong magnetic sources, such as microwaves, x-rays, speakers, etc.
  • Avoid forceful impacts; it is not recommended to wear your watch while playing any sports that may cause any shocks or jolts to the wrist (such as golf or tennis) unless your watch is intended for sports use.
  • After adjusting the hour/date on a piece with a crown security closing system, the crown must be tightened again to prevent outside elements from entering the case such as dust or humidity. To prevent damage to the movement, avoid adjusting the date between 9 PM and 3 AM so as to not disrupt the date wheel function.
  • The average lifespan of your battery is two to four years depending on the type of movement. We advise you not to leave an old battery inside your watch as an old battery can leak and damage the movement.
  • Before any contact with water, check that the crown and push buttons are properly closed. Do not activate any mechanical features while your watch is underwater unless your piece is designed for water sports or scuba diving.
  • Water-resistant watches should be washed with running lukewarm water after contact with seawater or chlorine. Watches that are worn in water should be checked for water resistance every two years to ensure the gaskets have not been compromised. Avoid contact with Fragrance, alcohol, cosmetics, ammonia, and chlorine, and always place your watch on a soft surface.
